What happens when you’ve finally achieved the wealth, freedom, or business exit you’ve spent years pursuing—but the thing that gave your life structure, identity, status, and purpose is suddenly gone?
In this episode, Dave Wolcott is joined by Karishma Ishmael, founder of Live Your Legacy, to explore the deeply personal side of wealth that rarely gets discussed. Karishma challenges entrepreneurs and investors to look beyond their balance sheets and intentionally build an identity, relationships, and sense of purpose that can survive success, transition, and life after the business.
What You’ll Learn
- How to recognize the deeper needs your business may be fulfilling—from identity and purpose to belonging, structure, and significance
- Why building strong relationships and a meaningful life shouldn’t wait until after an exit or financial freedom
- How to redefine “winning” beyond money, achievement, and the next milestone
Karishma Ishmael is the founder of Live Your Legacy, where she works with high-net-worth founders and families at the intersection of wealth, identity, and family dynamics. Her work focuses on pivotal transitions including business exits, succession, and wealth transfer—especially when the question shifts from “What am I building?” to “What do I want all of this to mean?”
For many entrepreneurs, a business quietly becomes much more than a source of income. It can provide identity, purpose, friendships, community, structure, status, relevance, and the feeling of being needed. That’s why achieving financial freedom or selling a business doesn’t automatically create fulfillment.
This episode explores wealth strategy, financial freedom, entrepreneurship, identity after a business exit, purpose, legacy planning, generational wealth, business succession, wealth transfer, family relationships, founder identity, personal growth, redefining success, high-net-worth families, and building a meaningful life beyond financial achievement.
I believe this is probably one of the most important conversations you can actually have, because it’s not about what you’re selling, or what you leave behind in terms of your wealth and your balance sheet. It’s really about who you are the day after you’re free.
Today our special guest is Karishma Ishmael, founder of Live Your Legacy. Karishma works with high-net-worth founders and families during the moments when wealth, identity, and family dynamics intersect, after an exit, through succession, during a wealth transfer, and when the question shifts from “what am I building” to “what do I want all of this to mean.” Please join me in welcoming Karishma.
Thank you so much. Hello, everyone. I’m so excited to be here. Dave and I have had some awesome conversations, and I’m really excited to connect with you all. I believe this is probably one of the most important conversations you can actually have, because it’s not about what you’re selling, or what you leave behind in terms of your wealth and your balance sheet. It’s really about who you are the day after you’re free.
A lot of us have built this wealth operating system, and this is where Dave’s mastermind, and his community and support, are really great at helping you maximize that in a lot of different ways. But what I want to ask you today is: what are your identity principles? How do you identify? What do you identify as, or with? What matters most to you? What does winning mean once the number stops being the scoreboard? Because a lot of us think, “One day I’ll make X,” and then you get to X and think, “No, no, I want Y.” And then you get to Y and realize, oh, we can actually see clearly now. So what happens when it’s no longer about that number calibrating the scoreboard? And more importantly, nobody really talks about whether the people closest to you actually know you, the version of you that built all of this, behind the founder, behind the investor, behind the professional.
Who are you underneath all of that? I want you to ask yourself: what needs does your business fill for you? Just explore that for yourself. Maybe your business fulfills a social need. Maybe it prevents boredom. For most of us, our business, our career, isn’t just a business; it’s quietly carrying everything that made us feel alive.
A lot of us think about walking into a networking event, and everyone asking, “So what do you do? Tell me about what you do.” That sense of purpose, that sense of identity, is really the reason we wake up in the morning and work; it fulfills that need for us in the social world, in our team, our community, our sense of belonging, our interactions, our friendships, our structure. That structure, that rhythm, that meaning built into every day. For many of us, work and business are also about status: the respect we’ve received from friends and community, the authority we’ve earned, that feeling of being important or relevant, maybe it’s medals or accolades at work, maybe it’s the respect of colleagues and coworkers, and that feeling of being needed. There’s a deep human need in every one of us to matter, to people and to something.
For years, I thought building wealth meant finding the next great investment. But as my portfolio grew, so did the complexity. I had real estate, private investments, insurance, tax strategies, and multiple advisors, yet no one was looking at the entire picture. I was still the one trying to connect all the dots, wondering if my wealth was actually working as efficiently as it could be. That experience taught me something most successful investors discover too late: building wealth isn’t just about owning more assets, it’s about making sure every part of your financial life works together. That’s why I created a complimentary masterclass called the Wealth Friction Tax. It reveals how disconnected investments, tax strategies, advisors, and financial decisions can quietly erode your wealth, and introduces a more coordinated way to manage it all. If you’ve built significant wealth but still feel like you’re the one holding all the pieces together, watch the complimentary masterclass at contrarianwealthbuilder.com.
What I’d like to put forth today is this: most of us feel, or might feel, that we’ll find that purpose, that contribution, that impact after the exit, after the day we’re free. Instead, what if we learned to bring it with us, and build it now, while we still have runway, while we still have our mental health, while we still have our physical health? What if we intentionally created that runway today? So how do we do this?
We need to get honest with ourselves and reframe how we see this conversation. First, we need to ask ourselves what the business has actually been caring for. Is it our identity? Our structure? Our sense of worth? Belonging? Significance? Whatever it is, just have that honest conversation with yourself and name it clearly. It is what it is, and just because it is, doesn’t mean it can’t change, but it starts with being honest about which of those things your business has been carrying for you.
Second, really deepen those roots. We talk so much about investing in asset classes, in stocks, in real estate. What if we invested in the things that truly matter: relationships, friends, our partners, our kids, not for the sake of wealth preservation or financial legacy, but for real, true connection.
Third, we need to redefine what winning means. A lot of us, entrepreneurs especially, I know I used to be this way, are tenacious, always chasing the next win, the next client, the next goal. The problem is you become addicted to the high of that dopamine hit. Instead of measuring our days by output, what if we measured them by connection, presence, and the depth and impact of the real people in our lives who’ll still be there tomorrow, beyond the exit?
And last but not least, build that deep anchor: an identity outside the business, one that can actually survive the exit, survive that transitional period, and truly outlast the portfolio.
