The Wealth Mindset Shift That Changes Everything

Listen Here

In this Wealth Strategy Deep Dive, Dave Wolcott explores one of the most overlooked drivers of wealth building: mindset. While most investors obsess over tactics, returns, and portfolio performance, Dave unpacks why true wealth creation starts with how you think about money, fulfillment, and personal identity. Drawing from his own journey as an entrepreneur, he explains how vision, gratitude, and self-awareness can fundamentally reshape your relationship with wealth—and why even high-net-worth individuals can still operate from scarcity if they haven’t done the inner work.

Dave dives into powerful concepts like separating your identity from your net worth, creating abundance through gratitude, and understanding how unresolved childhood money patterns can quietly drive financial decisions. He also shares why wealth is ultimately about energy, freedom, and self-actualization—not just accumulating more zeros in a bank account. If you’ve ever felt financially successful but emotionally fragile, this episode offers a transformative perspective on what it really means to build lasting wealth.

Key Takeaways:

  • Your financial success is shaped more by mindset than investment tactics.
  • Wealth becomes more powerful when your identity is no longer tied to your net worth.
  • Gratitude and abundance create a healthier, more sustainable relationship with money.

And frankly, think, you know, 80% of the wealth and the investing game is all mindset. It’s all how you think about things. It really is. You know, we were talking earlier about, right, you know, this mindset piece, and right, I love your concept of fulfilling air, right? How can we be more fulfilled, right? But what’s fascinating about creating a vision is when you have a vision, you don’t actually build to a vision. You actually come from a vision.

So if you can describe, you know, yourself, like if you’ve ever read Cameron Harrold’s book, Vivid Vision, right? And actually literally describe the smells, the sounds, and the emotions of everything in your life from your vision. You really come from that vision. And then, you know, talking about fulfillment, right? You can be fulfilled like, you know, I can give you an example, right?

For my marriage, you know, I’m talking about in my vision that, you know, my wife and I, after 27 years, are so comfortable with each other that we don’t get put out by the simple things or the little differences that we have or arguing about the how because we’re always focused on the why and we’re aligned with our values and things like that. So when you start to kind of create those things for yourself, you just kind of become that.

Totally. And you know, I’ll add something as well, JP, something that I’m really actively kind of working on now. And I think it’s amazing. So I know you have a lot of entrepreneurs in your audience, and really, uh, business is actually an extension of your own consciousness and nervous system, right? And a business gives us such a wonderful opportunity to really grow as people. And other people don’t necessarily have that opportunity. But as I pointed out earlier, we weren’t really talking about money in our family when we grew up. It was just a different generation, and there was so much scarcity. So what’s fascinating is as you grow your net worth, why a lot of people aren’t fulfilled, or you see people who win the lottery or maybe entertainers or athletes. that make all this money, and then they lose it all or they’re not happy, right, and they go off the rails.

A lot of that actually stems from, like, childhood trauma, right? That’s actually unresolved, and things, most of, you know, most people I know, right, and myself, right, money was frankly scarce when we grew up. You know, we were okay, but it was scarce. So, you know, that creates this subconscious pattern. in your nervous system of how you really think about money. So that’s why I know people with eight figures of net worth that are basically still scared to spend any money and feel like it’s all going to be gone. How about you? How did you overcome? Because it sounds like you’ve done a lot of work, I can tell. And for you, what was your journey where you’ve gotten to this place where you can see the abundance and fulfillment being the priority for you? Yeah, I think it’s a very evolutionary process that we all really go through. And again, as an entrepreneur, you constantly hit these different levels that you’re trying to think about. Okay, how do I get to the next level? And if you can be humble enough and have that humility to say, “Hey, I may be holding back.” You know, the growth of the organization, right, during some things.

So why don’t I do a deep dive, right, into some of these different areas? So I think it’s been pretty evolutionary for me, but we also run a mastermind community too. You know, we delve into these topics a lot, right, with different people. And frankly, I think, you know, 80 % of the wealth and the investing game is all mindset. It’s all how you think about things. It really is. If you’ve ever wondered how the wealthy use energy investments to reduce their tax bill while generating cash flow, we just answer every question on camera. Can I put you on the spot? Is there one or two that you think about that frame money in your mind that really have made a big change? Yeah, sure. I mean, one of the biggest ones is gratitude, for instance, right? And that’s why I wanted an opportunity to say that to you when we started this call. I’m really grateful for the opportunity to have connected with you. I’m grateful for this opportunity to talk to people. And I spend a lot of time in my day thinking about gratitude. As soon as I wake up in the morning and when I go to bed at night, this appreciation for gratitude is amazing.

Because whether I have a net worth of $100 or $100 million, you really need to be comfortable in your own skin. And I know that if I lose all my money, I mean, money can be made, right? I mean, that’s possible. And there’s another really—one thing you just said that’s so powerful. I just don’t want to; you’re throwing me gold nuggets, and I have to just take a moment. When you know that you could lose it and make it again, because that’s your relationship with money, it’s also your relationship with a higher spiritual power and money. And so what you’re really saying is, I trust money; money can trust me, and therefore I can even be more generous and giving because I trust that more of it can be made. I’m not; this isn’t the last dollar, and so many people just aren’t sure that that simple sentence shows certainty, and that certainty to me creates a lot more abundance and a lot more ability to really enjoy your money.

So it was a simple sentence, but I think there’s a gold nugget in that mindset. Yeah, for sure. If you really think about the bigger picture, I mean, all money is energy, right? And we can use that energy, positively or negatively in our lives, to achieve the things that we want. And what is it going to be for you, right? And as soon as you start getting past it, you will get to a point, right, where adding another zero doesn’t materially change things in your life, right? So how are you going to be fulfilled? What is that going to look like, right? And if you think about this whole thing, it’s actually really this journey towards self-actualization and consciousness, right? It’s really the same kind of construct, right? But I’d like to delve into a second point, which I’ve gotten clarity on, you know, really fairly recently, and I think it’s just a massive takeaway for people to really think about.

And actually, kudos to a friend of mine who’s actually in; he’s also in Austin. Psychedelic, or he’s really kind of a psychology coach and things like that. But there’s this fascinating concept around really co-dependence, right? So what we often do is we have this dependence around what our net worth is, how much is in our bank account, right? Or what our portfolio size is. But the day that you could separate yourself from your net worth and say, “Even if my net worth is $100, I have $100 in my bank account, I’m okay.” You know what? I’ve made it this far; I’m okay. I have skills, I have my health, I’m grateful for my family, and all of these things, like, I’m abundant; it’s amazing; I can grow wealth. And I’m not dependent on what that number is. And I’ve spent so many years really tying my identity, you know, to your net worth, to your passive income number, because these are all the goals. And let’s face it, we live in this, you know, hardcore grind-type society, right?

But this is not really the David Goggins approach. This is all about really being comfortable with yourself. And I think once you can truly achieve that, to your point, what you can give to others is absolutely exponential. Thanks for tuning in to our special solo series.
